Why would you need to kill a process in Windows XP or Vista?

We sometimes need to stop a process to diagnose a system problem, such as removing Spyware or computer viruses. One of the easiest yet most efficient way to accomplish this is to use the built-in Task Manager in Windows XP or Windows Vista. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press “Alt+Ctrl+Delete.”
  2. Click on “Task Manager“. You can also launch the Task Manager instantly if you press Ctrl + Shift + ESC simultaneously. This is much easier than accessing it from Ctrl + Alt + Delete or the taskbar. It works for both Windows XP or Windows Vista.

3. Select the process that you want to stop, then click on “End Task“.

It’s advised not to stop a system process. Stopping a system process can cause the computer to hang or freeze up.

I just found the sysguard.exe with a new name. weecsysguard.exe. It was in the C:\Program Files\jcvgws directory. I’ve noticed if you try and re-run a executable multiple times from a command prompt (tlist.exe for example to find a list of active processes), it will block the first attempt, but allow subsequent attempts. I killed the process then deleted the directory.

I wanted to let you all know that the Personal Antivirus has an expiration. It disappears after about 36-48 hours on it’s own. I have dealt with it on two separate computers and it did the same thing both times. It will be annoying but will go away once it does go in and delete the file. In the meantime just keep hitting ignore….

  7. Eric says:

ya “Spyware Terminator” is free & really effective, it has a browser security & Anti-Virus program also, but as far as i know this is 1 of the best free ones, that isnt a scam =)

Hi, I got pva.exe… and the page says to stop several processes. Unfortunately, several of them are “critical system processes” or whatever. Another website said to go into safe mode, but for some reason that produces a video mode incompatible with my monitor (Windows XP Home, some Widescreen Dell). So I can’t see anything in safe mode, only “1: Analog Input \n Cannot Display This Video Mode”. So how do I stop the processes?!?

I got that B.S. antivirus 2010 on my laptop some how and spent some time trying to figure out how to get rid of it without buying more software I didn’t want. Try going to your task manager first and getting rid of it there. I also downloaded for free windows defender which removed the trojan from my task bar.

  24. Michelle says:

I had the problem with Cyber Security. Downloaded itself onto my computer and kept giving me bogus security scans and threats, etc. I clicked on help and frequently asked questions on the cyber security pop-up screen. One of the FAQ was “how do I remove cyber security off of my computer”. The answer was to run the special uninstall program. I could not find this uninstall thing anywhere. Then I came here and saw something about going to common files, so I tried looking again. I went to my computer, then C: drive, then program files, then common files, then I found something called CS uninstall. I clicked on that, and 2 seconds later a dialogue box popped up that said that the uninstall was complete. I have not had a problem since. I don’t know if it will be that easy for anyone else, but I hope it is.

    Does anyone can help?
    Thanks.

  28. Corby says:

I had the common sense to do this myself, but it doesn’t permanently remove the virus( which is a sysguard). My scanner can’t seem to find the problem and I have to make sure that I press alt+ctrl+delete right away when my computer starts up or else the virus won’t let me open anything.
It seems I have a Firewall on the Internet from the virus (the virus wouldn’t let me go on any other websites and I’m using another computer to figure out how to fix it)….

  35. Steve says:

I recently downloaded a variation of this spyware by just visiting a website (didnt click or download anything) and have learned that the spyware is constantly re-written under many aliases with the more recent aliases being much harder to remove. This is what the spyware done to my computer:

    1) Created a fake program called “Antivirus 2009″ that tries to get you to submit a credit card payment for fake protection. (If you are fooled into doing this, immediately call your issuer and report your card as stolen and ask for a new card and number. Then, tell your issuer to refuse payment for the charge because you never got any services for your purchase. By federal law, the credit card issuer must give you a refund. If you used a debit card, you may not have this refund protection.)

    2) Changes registry entries regarding Group Policies that block one’s ability to start Task Manager, install legit anti-spyware, and other programs.

3 Blocks internet access to internet explorer and Avast Antispyware but still allows access for the Firefox browser. This can be overcome by rebooting in Safe Mode with Networking and selecting to login as Administrator, not your username.

    4) Corrupts system restore points so a simple system restore does not work. Earlier versions of this spyware did not do this.

I have successfully removed the “Antivirus 2009″ pop ups by booting into Safe Mode (F8) and then running scans with Malwarebytes and Avast free software. Unfortunately, I am having a hell of a time trying to correct the registry and restore the internet access for the IE browser. If I succeed, I will post it to this board.

Hi guys, this turd from hell popped up on mine a few minutes ago while I was porn surfing (hey, at least I admit it lol)
For those of you who are familiar with the regular contents of your task manager….
    Restart your PC.
AS soon as the windows logon screen appears, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the taskmanager running before the virus starts to kick in(not quite sure of the technical bits behind this but I can start my manager really early on in the boot process so I’m sure most people can)

This virus was called ‘aaaxsysguard.exe’ and in had files stored (found by my Antivira) in my local settings/temp folder which I previously couldn’t delete as the program was running.
Once restarted and Task manager running from early in the boot process, the virus seemed to stop.
I deleted the files in .temp folder and I’m about to start looking in the System32 folder for anything foreign (I hide porn in there so am reasonably familiar with it’s normal, legitimate contents)
Will keep this updated as and when I find something.
    Bernie.

  37. Bernie says:

    Ok…..
I ran msconfig as elsewhere suggested.
Click on the STARTUP tab and look at the file names on the laft hand column called STARTUP ITEM.
You should find something foreign or that looks out of place in the list (to the right is a location address of where it is on your hardrive)
These f*ckers usually are hiding in the DOCUMENTS/LOCAL SETTING area, most legit stuff is usually in PROGRAM FILES or SYSTEM£” etc so it should be easy to spot.
This one was in a folder called ‘HMATDF’.

Click the box on the left that corresponds to the virus, so that there is no tick in the box, thus turning it off.
Now go into that folder and delete HMATDF, then empty the recycle bin.
Set a system restore point, and restart the pc.
Run msconfig again and see if the aforementionned file is still there, hopefully it won’t be.
If it is, then methinks it’s time to start checking the entire registry and there are others on here who will be much more competent than me.
    I’ll be back soon!
Sorry if this is somewhat elemnentary fro a lot of people on here but there are others who like mw aren’t so clued up on Windows and need to poke around a lot so I posted this for them :o )

    Bernie.
