I have this virus but I do not have that process running….I do, however, have a process running named wini10733. And I can’t figure out how to get rid of it. It’s disabling all of my virus scan programs, too.

Dude, this spyware came out of nowhere, blew through the antivirus and the spyware, (McAfee) by the time it caught it it was already installing itself on the drive. No matter what. It just went straight for the drive. I blocked it, declined it, closed it, nothing works, it writes itself directly to the drive. Furthermore, it prevents you from downloading any other spyware programs, it will come up an error just before completing the install also it will direct you to other sites so you cannot find out any ifo on it. I swear, it went back to one of the sites and it was gone, a spyware purchase site… buy now….I went to the registry deleted the damm thing, only to have it appear again, I removed files from the win32, which were initially blocked. sorry you can’t delete me bastard!! look for the winsrc.dll, well it looks like the windows security shield. Deleted…. I rebooted numerous times, it even prevented me from using the freekin task manager, i swear…It does not want to be stopped. it wants to run continually…My friend came over to offer some help although we just ended up making another user and running the task manager, maybe safe mode…or unistall and reinstall the mcafee. which really did not get it to fix. I figured that a complete reinstall may be around the corner, comming soon, what i did was to install … which moved them to another file (valt) It is still in my reg, although it does not say 2009…I’m probably going to go through it again and delete that particular key.(hate that) Well the big red bubble with the x is gone, so at least everything is somewhat working…..

I have not yet d/l’d XP Antispyware, but it is on my System Tray as a big red X icon and I can’t get rid of it! It doesn’t come up on my computer yet since it hasn’t been downloaded, so how I can delete it without downloading it first?!?!

  10. By FinalWish on Oct 15, 2008 | Reply

This is very complicated and I’m not much of a computer wiz. When I got it on my computer I simply used system restore to go to the last checkpoint. This got rid of it.

If you installed something important on your computer however, that may very well be gone too. It does not delete internet cookies, e-mails, or Word documents.

I have not/wont allow this f***ing thing to install on my laptop, not even sure where it came from, Avast Pro won’t even pick it up anymore, even on a reboot scan ( For registry file scan/fix ). For a while, i my “On-Access Protection” (Firewall) was disabled, and had arrors, Task Manager disabled, Firefox links go to spam sites. Over all, the creator/writer of this should be taken out back, tossed around, shot, stabbed, whatever!! But! Not buried, they dont deserve that much!! I wish you all the best of luck removing this, i am still trying. Just wanted to point out what it has done to me anyhow, so far! Been at removing this on my own for 2-3 days now, so we’ll see how this goes for me anyhow.

    *Cheers*

I followed your instructions, but completed the whole process in safe mode. It took a while but was able to delete xp antispyware 2009 temeporarily. I am not sure if it would come back. Many folks have stated that xp antispyware can come back if not completely deleted. Maybe some hidden files I can’t find.

I’d suggest just doing a simple system restore (it just worked for me).

    Start>Help and Support>Under the “Pick a Task” option>System Restore

Choose the most recent date that a restore point was created (prior to the infection).

After you’ve rebooted, run all good diagnostics/anti-spyware/registry cleaners.

    Good luck.

I think XP Antispyware 2009 is what disabled my task manager. I followed the instructions on the Microsoft website about re-activating it, but even after doing that and restarting, nothing changes and I am unable to stop the process. Please help, it’s invading and slowing down everything.

ok so i hear my dad ask me to come help with the computer and i look and it says its infected, i know it isnt so i disconnect from internet, doesnt do anything. while im disconnecting he clicks it and it installs…..so i end process and everything for it then end explorer process then restart it and the red x goes away. then i log onto my account and guess what…ITS BACK…so i go around trying to figure out what this thing is and see that it is a virus spyware program and this just has to happen right when our anti virus expires. so i get the free version of spy hunter then delete cokkies and files that pop up and i was messing with it. then my mom comes home with new anti virus i install it and it messes up so i restart computer a few times and realize that the little bubble isnt popping up anymore cause i did delete it, i reinstalled it (dont get mad at me) then just uninstalled from the controll panel and the bubble was still there and all of a sudden it just goes away…so i dont know if its gone for good but at least now i have some protection if it comes back.

A sytem restore took care of it for me after four intense and frustrating hours, trying to remove all the files and change the registry manually. Doing it the manual way took away the X and the pop-up and left me unable to find any traces of it, but my computer was still completely messed up. It would perform ok in safe mode (basic), but as soon as I tried to open internet explorer or any kind of anti virus software in regular or network-safe-mode the computer would close down all the windows and reboot by it self. Again and again. Before you do anything else, try a system restore from a date about a week ago and when it’s back up and running run all your antivirus and clean up software to prevent future infection.

I received this virus last night and when I finished reading everyones issues, I decided to try the System Restore. Since that was the only reply to your questions that made sense. I System Restored to a few days back and noticed that programs I installed earlier in the week were gone, but the Antispyware XP was still on my computer. I tried to run my antivirus program and still wouldn’t work at all. Unless I have to go through 4 intense and frustrating hours like Marius did, then try a System Restore, but I don’t really see that working since a System Restore didn’t work for me in the first place. Hopefully someone can figure this problem out.

  47. By Rich on Oct 23, 2008 | Reply

I tried System Restore but it wouldn’t function. It just sat there and did nothing until I escaped out of it.

I called Cablevision’s Optimun Online department. I used their CA (Computer Associates) free web protection software with their online service. The software got blown away by this virus. The guy on the phone said he had seen this virus before and suggested that it nearly impossible to fix and to do a complete reintall of my computer. Not the answer I wanted to hear, but this virus is different than any other I have seen. I can’t do a system restore. But the hijacking of the two browsers (Internet Explorer and Firefox) is the most frustrating. I can’t get to the sites to download software that might or might not clean this garbage. I can’t even research this as I get redirected to bogus sites whenever I do. This one is powerful. It sounds like even the manual deletion of files is hit or miss. I am about to throw in the towel after a couple of days and wipe out my hard drive, which many people do annually anyway to have a clean PC. Other ways may be a waste of time. I will not pay for external software. That is completely hit or miss, or bogus in many cases.

Great guide altough it is not really complete. And the virus was in other subdirectories etc. in the register. I suggest you just press CTRL+F in regedit and then search for any key with the name “antispywar” or “xp2009″ or “antispyware”. Just try some of these. (as well on your pc)

I removed most of it but the only thing that still remains is the anoying balloon that says i’m infected..

Like others have mentioned, this virus deleted all my system restore dates, locked me out of task manager, and hijacked my IE. Thinking to close the barn door after the horses had bolted, visited Best Buy and purchased software, which the Geek Squad guys recommended as a good tool. Installed it last night … lo and behold, overnight it ran a scan which identified antispyware xp 900, quarantined it, and even fixed my Internet Explorer! Even the little red circle with the x in it is gone!

I’m not a shill for the company & don’t know if it will work for others, but thought I’d share the info for anyone out there as frustrated as I have been tring to get this ?$#@!! thing off my computer. I appear to have lucked out!

This dam thing downloaded and installed itself on tuesday. It disabled my firewall, anti-virus and ad-aware and created it’s own security center(firewall, auto updates, anti-virus). It seems it also deleted most of my stuff on my hard drive. I was able to delete most of the virus, but the red x is still there. I was finally able to do a system restore, but it did not fix the problem. I can install spybot but still cannot run it. Same with ad-aware and AVG. The only thing that works on my puter is firefox now. IE doesn’t work, MSN messenger doesn’t work, video games do not work..etc. Anyone else have this same problem and a cure?

  59. By Tom on Oct 24, 2008 | Reply

I installed Spyhunter detectin software and scanned the hard drive thoroughly. It took a while but eventually showed a bunch of infected files as well as the location of those files. What I did is that I deleted all the files manually, reboot and XP Antispyware 2009 is gone. It’s true that I am good with the computer, but not impossible for most people. Give it a try. You don’t have to pay a cent if you know how it works.

the virus has now somehow infected my laptop to such an extent that all of the above-mentioned symptoms have occurred, yet my computer can’t even boot after a restart. It goes to a black screen where I can move my mouse yet nothing happens when I boot up.

I no longer have my XP installation disks, so do I need to somehow create a boot disk? Or find a basic installation disk? And even that what do I do? Any thoughts ideas, or perhaps keys to press during startup to go into Safe Mode?

I dont know how this thing managed to get in my computer, but luckily I hate updating my computer and didn’t download it. I had a red bubble with an X popping up every 30 seconds, which drove me crazy for 2 days. I ran antivirus/spyware scans and the X was still there, however I was able to get rid of it by performing a System Restore. The X is finally gone and my virus scan did not show anything for Xp Antispyware 2009.

So for those who are getting the annoying X popups every few seconds do a System Restore.

For those of you who have the “light” version of this virus, be freaking happy about it. I have the hardcore version, which uninstalled all of my freaking applications, so I can’t run Firefox or IE to download the antimalware software. I’ve tried doing system restores many times now, and it DOES NOT WORK. This virus is brutal and I’m trying to delete the brastk.exe file and it says access is denied: “make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.” What a pile of crap! I work at Best Buy and I know that Geek Squad will fix it, for those of you who want them to fix it for you. They said that this is the most common virus that they get. I’m so angry!

I deleted the program files (was able to do this after the restore), but not able to delete the little red circle – I tried what one user recommended above which was to go to c:\windows\system32 and delete the exe named brastk.exe – unfortunately I am unable to delete it. I fell back to an earlier restore date and this time, I was notified by windows that my firewall was disabled. As soon as I re-enabled, it the pop-ups started again. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

2.. To recap, try to delete all the *.exe files installed around the time of infection. If you are unable to delete, just rename the them to dummy name and recreate a same file with nothing in it and make it READ only.

then restart your PC…this time you can go and delete renamed dummy files

I used Note Pad to create the files, be sure to change the extension to “all files” when saving. After saving immediately go to Windows Explorer click the file, go to properties and change the file to “READ” only. Do not delete the new brastk.exe

    Good luck.

    4. Restart the computer.

    5. Find abrastk.exe and delete it.

Also – I sometimes get a shield attached to the Turn Off icon when called up from the Turn Off Computer. It tells me to click it to install improtant updates. Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I don’t trust this – it isn’t always there and I fear it is another route into reinfecting my machine. Has anyone else seen this?

It’s safe to say that anyone who paid money to this Antivirus 2009 has lost it. These guys are anonymous crooks and this is one of the most remorseless viruses ever.

What it does (among other things), it takes over your browser, so whenever you google anything it redirects you to a page alarming you about your infection and telling you you need to buy their antivirus software. Which when you do, and you send them money, just loads even more crap onto your computer that you will have one hell of a time dealing with.

If this virus is on your computer and you attempt to google something, click the “Cached” results rather than regular results.

I shouldn’t have to tell you that you better not put any kind of sensitive personal info out there while this beast is oozing its way thru your machine. Also, even when you think you have it removed, you might not be able to trust your machine anymore because rootkit files get on there and hide. So I wouldn’t really want to use a machine infected with this virus for online banking or anything like that, even when you think you have it wiped out because sorry to say, you may not have it wiped out after all.

Just my 2c, sorry to be the bearer of bad news on this virus

new malware, spyware, antiware, antivirus 2000 somethings are smarter than that, Think about it for a minute ? These huge con artists organizations have been working on all these kind of things for years, and it’s been getting worst because they are getting better than the

    Hi,

The answer to this may have already been posted… (i tried reading all the posts but i started to get a headache!)

After the “spawn” of cyber hell got onto to my laptop i can no longer run windows. It either freezes as windows is loading or it opens on the main screen and freezes there.

I’ve tried running in the safe modes (e.g. command prompt & networking etc) but that freezes too.

This thing has totally screwed up my laptop. I can’t even do a systems restore.

I took it to the geek squad, they said they could try to do a system restore (somehow) but it may not completely fix the problem. And i didnt want to spend $100-$200 on them “trying” to fix it, and losing all my data anyway.

Has anyway else had the problem of not being able to open windows (inc. trying thorugh the safe mode), but has somehow managed to find a way???

Keeping my fingers crossed… Thanks Resh

To all I am so pissed.. About two weeks ago I started getting the message that my computer was infected with a virus. I thought maybe one of my kids picked it up from one of the teen web-sites. No knowing I downloaded and paid for this Antispyware XP2009 and there is no way to get you money back I tried.

A bit of good news. I’m thankful I found this web site and followed the instructions of one person who kept getting the big RED X box and I think that mine may be gone. My speed still seems to be a bit slow but we will see.

    This is what I did:

I had to close the RED X box because if you don’t it will not let you delete antispyware program.

I deleted all files under my computer that were not there before the date I downloaded this crap.

Then I wen to programs and deleted the Antispyware program.

Finally I went to the recycle bind and deleted everything from there.

I restarted my computer and the RED X box was gone.

Lets hope is works. I was about to throw my computer out the window only because I felt so stupid that I was scammed. Thanks for this website

Just ten minutes ago, my anti-virus software was disabled and I had that annoying red circle. Then, all of a sudden, my anti-virus was back up and running, and the red circle was gone. I’m running the software while it still works and then I guess I’ll go from there. Has anyone else had this thing actually appear and then disappear like that? I can’t find any trace of any of the files from the virus on my computer, even though last time, those files were very specifically there. I also don’t have that brastk file in my processes and I can’t find it anywhere. As a safe bet, I’m going to try to redo everything I did last time either before I go to work or when I get home.

Guys, the system restore worked perfectly for me. I got this today by downloading a video on BMW control arm assemblies. Go to Start, select “Help and Support’, select “Undo changes to your computer with System Restore” under the ‘Pick a task’ section, select a bolded restore date before you got the virus, kiss it goodbye. It worked for me, but I heard it has not worked for everyone. My browser is back, my system tray is clean, and no BS popups. totally Gone.
