    Yo Anthony n Greg,
    Try this…..,
I just applied a method of getting rid this annoying shit fuck so-called XP Anti Virus 2008! By ending process the ANTVRS.EXE (to find it: Start - RUN - type taskmgr - Click OK - You’ll find WINDOWS TASK MANAGER - find item ANTVRS.EXE - Click Right - Click left: end process the ANTVRS.EXE) It works, man!….. BUT, I must say…BUT you must delete the XP Anti Virus 2008 icon immediately! Because it can regenerate itself into its other twin! Make sure you guys, delete that Evil icon in the recycle bin also, ok?
    THANKS, good luck…

  27. By AntivirusExpert on Jun 25, 2008 | Reply

ANTVRS.EXE may not necessarly be part of XP antivirus 2008. This malware exists in a number of variations, which makes it difficult to detect them. Besides, they use different filenames creation patterns to make detection and removal as painful as possible. I can easily name a dozen reputable security programs that cannot get rid of antivirus 2008, no matter what vendors claim.

ugm, just a suggestion, if anyone of you guys cant find antivrs.exe, go to start, run, then browse your application files, antivirus 2008 could have been stuck with your normal and helpful files, make sure to check your files after deletion because antirus 2008 can make a duplicate for itself to prevent you from deleting it permanently…..

antivirus 2008 Pro infected my computer last Thursday night and I have tried many things to get rid of it. I downloaded Spy Doctor and did a full scan in both normal and safe modes and a lot of trojans etc were removed but the antivirus 2008 pro was still there, so I got help from HP techs and I removed the virus from my Task manager processes list ( the entire tree) deleted the icon and removed the virus from my programs list ( accessed from start button . I then deleted both of these from the recycle bin. The next scan showed ” clear ” that is until I re-boot.. then it is back again. I am running a 2000 version of XP with service pack 2. The HP guys say that the virus infected my boot file … makes sense. I hate that I am faced with a re-format ( destructive recovery) process. Why does the antivirus 2008 Pro not appear on the populated list in “add and remove programs ?”

I just encountered this the other day with my mother-in-law. I was able to get rid of it for the time being. I opened task manager and stopped the antivirus process. Then I went to My Computer, Local C:/, Program Files and deleted the entire folder labled Antivirus2008y. Emptied the recycle bin and restarted the computer. This seemed to work. Hopefully for good.

  38. By Basmi on Jul 2, 2008 | Reply

You dont have to search for the antvrs.exe
Just look for the anti virus 2008 icon on the task manager.
    Hope it will work.

This thing has infected IE with a toolbar and it has made it so I cannot go into the add/remove programs as it has taken away my buttons. Also, it’s messed up my desktop.

I was able to disable some of it and keep it from reinstalling itself, but the trojans are still there. They’re labeled differently than you have listed here as well. I’m thinking I’m going to have to wipe clean and start over…

    *sigh*

Not a good thing. Whoever created this should be skinned alive!

If anyone has success removing the tool bar…nqgpedlr…from IE, please let me know!

Just removed the virus from my computer by starting it in the safe mode (f8 on startup)arrow keys to select safe mode then log onto an account with administrator priviliges. Go to my computer/local disc C/ program files/then look for antivirus2008 and right click and hit the delete. Then go to trash can and empty it. Restart your computer and the nasty antivirus 2008 icon in lower right hand corner is removed. This is for windows XP

Just cleaned the Vista Antiviurus 2008 virus from my computer via SYSTEM RESTORE. Thank you all for your help. This is, by far, the easiest method I’ve found. I was infected yesterday and it drove me crazy, but thanks to all of your posts, I’m VIRUS FREE! If you have this problem, do a system restore for a date/time prior to the day you were infected-IT WORKS AND IT’S RISK FREE. Hope this helps someone else.

Running Windows XP service pack 3. I could not open taskmgr using control-alt-delete or run as both methods had been disabled by the virus. I then restarted in safe mode by turning on the computer while holding down the F8 key. Then logged on as Administrator, then went to My Computer, then Program Files then right clicked on all the programs that sounded suspect. After right clicking I went to Properties and looked at the install dates. If they were on the dtae I got the virus I deleted them. Warning, the names have changed and are not the same ones from earlier posts. After this I rebooted normally half the stuff was gone as were the pop ups, but I was still locked out of task manager and the time was still changed to military. So then I rebooted in safe mode and did a system restore to the day before I got the virus. That worked! Lastly I went and manually deleted all the files at the top of this page XP tells you to. Good luck! It worked for me.

For those that can not find ANTVRS.EXE file: There are several iterations of this program, my pop up was Ultimate Antivirus 2008 and the process was UAV.exe get it U_ltimate A_nti V_irus folder. The folder and processes will be an acronym of the form you have i.e. Vista Antivirus 2008 has VAV.exe

    Hope this helps.

only problem is that wininet.dll and shlwapi.dll are both legitimate windows files. delete the wrong one and … poof. there goes your computer. bloody malware bastards have to name their trash files after windows32 files dont they…. even put them in the same place to make it even harder to distinguish between the good and the bad.

We had the antivirus2008 pop up last night for no reason, luckily we didn;t register or pay for anything- We corrected it after we found this site and comments, mainly from Ching San. We have windows xp and this is what we did to get rid of it.
    1. hit start button, then run, then type in taskmgr right click ok
    2. find ANTVRS.EXE , then left click on end process tree.
    3. Go to recycle bin and delete antivirus file
4.Then go to seach, put in Antivirus2008 to see if it’s anywhere else on your computer. If so,right click and choose delete.
    5. Go back to recycle bin and delte this antivirus file(s).
    6. Shut down computer, then start again and it should be gone(along with the icon !)

Th elatest version of this installed under c:/Program Files/SAV/

    and disguised itself as SymantecAntiVirus.

Start you machine in Safe Mode with Networking. This will prevent the thing from starting in the first place

Delete the reg key that starts it. In my case it was SAV.exe. If yours is not SAV, then look in this hive to see what looks out of place.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\”[RANDOM NAME]” = “C:\Program Files\[RANDOM NAME]\[RANDOM NAME].exe”

  82. By Craig on Sep 29, 2008 | Reply

I’m not sure if this will help anyone but here are the steps I took:

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, to bring up task manager, go to processes, and find something like sav.exe. Tell windows to end task and push ok.

Delete the “shortcut icon” from your desktop.

Go to My Computer-C Drive-Program files, find SAV, or something of the sort. Delete all files inside folder, and empty recycle bin.

    Restart computer.

If that does not work I recommend backing up and doing a system restore.
