i didn’t buy Personal Antivirus. I got Antivirus 360 and I don’t need your Personal Antivirus. How do I delete it? Thank you

I wish that I had had this information 24 hours ago. With it I could have easily removed Personal Antivirus from my wifes computer.

As it is I bought Spyware Doctor for $29.95 which was advertizing that it would remove Personal Antivirus. Well, it didn’t and after it finish removing all the suspected malware on my computer, Internet Explorer would not function proper. Therefore I could no longer perform Windows Update functions.

I have spent many hours reinstalling the legacy software on my computer. What a wast of time. I sure hope that others who have this infection find this site and are able to easily remove Personal Antivirus.

I managed to get rid of Personal Antivirus within an hour. Yes, I am somewhat computer savvy and don’t try this if you are not. Here’s what I did. First of all, I reboot the computer in safe mode. From safe-mode, I navigated to system restore and picked a date that I believe it’s good. After a few minutes, my computer rebooted in normal mode. This is not done. I then deleted all the traces and bad entries. Most of them are listed above. Reboot again. Guess what? See ya! Personal Antivirus no more!

    Hi,

My laptop has just been infected by the Personal Antivirus. I was wondering if you could help me. I’ve read how you got rid of this virus and went into safe mode but am unsure how to proceed from this point? Would you be able to guide me?

  8. By Don on Apr 17, 2009 | Reply

If you install antivirus software from Symantec, it should take care of all the removal steps. From my experience, I had to stop PAV.exe process first to allow a successful installation of the Symantec antivirus software.

So my computer caught the stupid Personal Antivirus. I tried using my spyware to scan for it and to get rid of it, but it did nothing!!! I was about to smash my computer!!!So piss!!! Well, I tried everything I could think of, and then finally just decided to try and delete it! I searched my whole computer for PAV and deleted everything that had PAV, and now nothing!!!YAY!!! I’m hoping it’s finally gone for good, though I’m not sure, but it’s gone, for now!

Ok, so its now been 2 days. I have tried everything. scanning my computer for everything with PAV and deleting it, the above tips, deleting IE and reinstalling. Nothing is working. I tried to restore, but for some reason my computer won’t do that. My active x is still coming up that I need to dl personal antivirus and some, not all, of my web pages are coming up with that annoying warning. Anymore suggestions?

I believe what Corey has posted has worked for me as well. Ken…I would be careful about doing the uninstall from program files, as when I went there to uninstall, it wanted to run pav.exe , which might install the virus thing?

Anyway, thank you Corey! I had to go to a different internet source to even get this information, as everytime I went to a website to get information on how to get rid of the thing, the stupid Pav thing would come up.

I hope it is gone for good!

Does anyone know a way around this. I am not able to even access the internet. Totally locked up as should those involved in placing this on our computers. If they are getting some to actually pay for thier so called service why can they not be traced down and prosecuted?

oh yeah, one thing i found that helps is that you can disable PAV from running when your computer starts. go to run and type in msconfig. then go to the start up tab and make sure that PAV is unchecked. then click apply. then restart your computer to see if that helps block the program.

Well done Ken, thank you, this really was a tricky little sucker, I had tried everything and none on them worked, like someone else says no amount of restore dates worked, Norton fails to detect it and the annoying little so and so sits there, anyway if you follow info as set out in Ken’s post it works eventually, I ran it in safe mode and followed instructions ,after selecting C drive, please note each one is a file so its Programme files, then you will see a folder for Common files then look for Uninstall, this might sound obvious to computer boffins but for us thicker users, not so. Anyway mine still not want to run in normal mode and it took three more attempts before my computer came back to life and worked completely perfectly without that bloody annoying PAV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thank you Ken

    another way to remove PAV

    restart in safe mode

    go start/run type in msconfig
then go startup tab.. disable the pav.exe
press ok or close then restart later

Go to C:\program files then find the PAV folder and delete it. also delete the shortcut on the desktop

open IE.. go to manage addons and disable the wincontrol.dll Browser Help Object then close your IE. (wincontrol.dll is the cause of the problem that prevents your browser from opening sites and other payloads)

    Go to C:\widows\system32\
search for wincontrol.dll and delete it

    restart your computer…

    done.. ^^

Please follow my instructions to uninstall Personal Antivirus

    1.Open My computer, choose Disk C;
    2.Find the folder Program Files\Common Files\Uninstal\PAV\Uninstall.exe;
    3.Run the file Uninstall.exe

After that our product will be removed.
Feel free to contact us if you need any help

Give it a try. It may be their legal backdoor way out.

I know it may say theres an error but when you click on Uninstall you have to right click and then click run as click log on as administrator. Thats what helped me.

I just spent three days trying to get rid of this awful program. Once I tried safe mode and system restore dated back a few days, that was the solution! I’m not that great with the computer, but the system restore was quite easy (maybe I just lucked out), and I am so glad to have my computer back to normal. It only took about 15 or 20 minutes.

  97. By Jesse on May 10, 2009 | Reply

System Restore would not completely get rid of personal antivirus. There’re so many dll’s hidden in the c drive, but system restore is definitely a good first step to get your computer up and running then perform other method to competely destroy PAV. I definitely don’t want any traces of this bastard staying in my computer while I use it for banking and paying bills.

I downloaded Spy Hunter free version. Scanned the computer. Spy Hunter listed all infections. Down to the location.

I tried to buy SH but PAV would not allow it. So, I followed the location on my computer to remove it manually. When I found winexplorer.dll I tried to delete it. So, I changed .dll to .doc. Still no luck. Changed it back to .dll and could delete it.

I bought Spy Hunter. These guys are good.

    Try it.

OK, I’ve spent a couple of hours on this and I think I’ve got rid.
I have no idea if Ken is genuine or not but I tried his fix and couldnt find any uninstall file
    in Common Programs.
    Heres what worked for me.
Sorry if its long and possibly talking down to those who know a bit but its aimed at the beginner.
1.Start your computer in SafeMode (keep pressing F8 about once a second until a list of options comes up and one of them should be safe mode)
2.When its booted up click on Start then click Run
then type MSCONFIG and click ok.
    Click on the Startup tab.
In here are all the things that start up whenever you power your computer up.
A lot of them are unnecessary but you have to be careful because you could cause problems if you stop one starting that is needed in the general running of the computer.
If in doubt, do not remove the tick.
Find pav.exe or anything like that and remove its tick.
    Click Apply then click Close.
    Click No to restarting now.
3.Click on Start then click Run
In the box that appears type REGEDIT
    and click OK.
Again do this with caution because delete the wrong thing and it could cause you more problems.
Press F3 to search and type in PAV.
When I did it, it found about 6 entries. Some were innocent entries to do with other things (eg printing).
Some were obvious eg a folder called PAV.
    Delete any folders called PAV.
If in doubt then do not delete.
Press F3 to search for the next occurence then click OK when it says its finished.
Click the x in top right corner to close Regedit.
    4.Double click on My Computer.
    Double Click on C:
    Double click on Program Files
Look for a PAV folder and if you find one, right click on it and click on Delete.
    Double click on Common Files
Look for a PAV folder and if you find one, right click on it and click on Delete.
    5.Click on Start
On mine I still had the PAV shield in the left column so I right clicked on it and clicked on Delete.
6.Also, if you click on All Programs
I also still had a folder called PAV which I again right clicked and clicked on Delete.
7.Go back to your Desktop and empty your Recycle Bin which should contain PAV folders etc
8.Restart your computer and cross your fingers and pray to any Gods you may have and
    hopefully it will be gone.
    Good luck

Thanks Phantom and Cory. Going to Safe mode worked for me. I got the Trojan for the PAV.EXE on my computer at 9:30pm tonight and read through the advise on this blog and within 30mins after going to safe mode it is gone. I have Vista. I tried to uninstall but that did not work for me on Vista. If you have Vista when in Safe mode (click F8 every second after you reboot) then you need to go to Start, All Programs, Accessories then Run. Follow the steps from ‘The Phantom’ it works and I am not that Saavy either. Delete any files with PAV I had 5 total. I could not delete the PAV.JOB files. But after rebooting PAV was gone. I purchased the Spyhunter now I need to see if I can cancel the CC purchase that was a waste; it did not work. Wish you well!!

Now that I’m convinced (after read about it on http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/personal-antivirus) that this stupid Personal Antivirus, also known as PersonalAntivirus, is a FAKE Antivirus application, I need to uninstall it from my PC. First, I went to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Application, but it was not there. I did a search and I found it on C:/program files. I tried to delete the folder, but failed because it was running at the background. Then I went to stop the processes at Windows Task Manager Menu (Alt+Ctrl+Delete), select Processes and highlight PAV.exe and click on “End Process”. Then I went back to C:\program file and delete PAV.exe file. Guess what, the stupid stuff is GONE.

    Good luck

I solved the problem this way since the file .dll apparently from the comments above changes names as time goes by. I solved the problem by doing a search in C: drive for *.dll (all files with .dll extension), then do right click on the list, select from the “views menu” the option “details”. Finally reorganize by “date modified”. The malicious file should be date around the date you installed the spyware, in my case it was the only .dll file I have found in today. I have tested and explorer is working normally now.
As somebody mentioned above once you locate the malicious files (I found it system32 folder) rename the file with a .doc extenstion, retart your computer and then delete the file with the .doc extention.
    best

    1.Open My computer, choose Disk C;

    3.Run the file Uninstall.exe

I tried manually deleting this virus but could not find all the files, I think they were named differently. What did work was a system restore to a restore point. I also immediately renewed my antivirus and let it run a scan. So far so good!

    Seriously …. Ken …. Thanks !!

If Anyone Has The ‘PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS’ Do This:

    1.Click ‘START MENU’-Click ‘COMPUTER’

2.Click ‘LOCAL DISK (C:)-Click ‘PROGRAM FILES’

    3.Click ‘COMMON FILES’-Click ‘UNINSTALL’

    4.Right-Click ‘UNINSTALL.EXE’-Click ‘OPEN’

    5.Click ‘ALLOW’-Wait And …..

…. ALL TRACES AND ANNOYING MESSAGES RELATED TO ‘PAV’ OR ‘PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS’ ARE GONE !! …. (you MAY need to repeat steps 1 and 2 to delete the empty ‘PAV’ folder

    -Only ****DON’T CLICK ‘COMMON FILES’****
Instead right-click on ‘PAV’ Folder (if it exists, if not forget it) And Click ‘DELETE’-Click ‘CONTINUE’ And It’s Gone !!

*I was skeptical at first but it really did work and it only took me less than 5mins :)

    AGAIN… THANK YOU, KEN-YOU’RE A LIFESAVER !

My Vista laptop got infected with this annoying rouge Personal Antivirus. Scanning it with AVG Antivirus do not work. Tried to remove it manually using instructions found on the Web – is not a good idea since there are so many files/registry to change, specially for non computer savvy.

Eventually, I end up doing the System Restore. That seems to fix the problem.

How I get it, I was on Friendster and the moment I hit View Messages, it started popping up to install and a message disguising itself as my firewall is asking me to Block/Ignore malicious software. Since Im aware Im not using it as my firewall, I immediately detect I got hit.

Well, for those who become a victim of this PersonalAntivirus – for Windows Vista,do as follows:

    1. Start->Run msconfig
    2. Under Boot tab, select Safe Boot, Apply and start on Safe Mode
    3. Start->Run rstrui.exe
    4. Then proceed with the System Restore. Typically it will recommend the last known good which will be the recommended restore point.

Be patient as System Restore takes time to start.
    5. Reboot, then run msconfig again. This time disable Safe Mode, then reboot.

It may not work for some situations, but its the easy fix to remove the rouge PersonalAntivirus.

    Goodluck!

OMG! I’m so stoked that this work! So im gonna share with everyone how to do this.Someone already ,mentioned this. But i’ll do it again.

First you want to restart your computer in safe mode. By turning it off. Then turn it on. But continually press f8 while it’s coming on. It should take you to this black and white screen. Then go to safe mode. Once your in your account.

    go start/run type in msconfig
then go startup tab.. disable the pav.exe
press ok or close then restart later

Go to C:\program files then find the PAV folder and delete it. also delete the shortcut on the desktop

open IE.. go to manage addons and disable the wincontrol.dll Browser Help Object then close your IE. (wincontrol.dll is the cause of the problem that prevents your browser from opening sites and other payloads)

    Go to C:\widows\system32\
search for wincontrol.dll and delete it

    restart your computer…

    done.. ^^

  214. By Victor on Jun 13, 2009 | Reply

Thanks BRITNEY, your step by step remedial process worked perfectly, and after a couple of frustrating hours I am now completely rid of PAV!

I found PAV on my computer this morning and it is certainly extremely annoying and invasive – I think my kids must have inadvertently downloaded it, as computer was fine yesterday.

As mentioned by someone else, in my case using XP OS the file was winexplorer.dll rather than wincontrol.dll

    I also removed the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Uninstall\PAV entry

  215. By Victor on Jun 13, 2009 | Reply

I guess my previous thanks should have really been directed to “Clamburgeritto” for the original post outlining the steps to rid system of PAV – this solution certainly worked for me.

I also performed the REGEDIT step that “The_Phantom” (later “BillyBob”)suggested:-

“3.Click on Start then click Run
In the box that appears type REGEDIT
    and click OK.
Again do this with caution because delete the wrong thing and it could cause you more problems.
Press F3 to search and type in PAV.
When I did it, it found about 6 entries. Some were innocent entries to do with other things (eg printing).
Some were obvious eg a folder called PAV.
    Delete any folders called PAV.
If in doubt then do not delete.
Press F3 to search for the next occurence then click OK when it says its finished.
Click the x in top right corner to close Regedit.”

I was tempted to try to the “Ken” fix that so many have been referring to:-

    “1.Open My computer, choose Disk C;
    2.Find the folder Program Files\Common Files\Uninstal\PAV\Uninstall.exe;
    3.Run the file Uninstall.exe”

But this almost seemed too good to be true, too easy, so I was suspicious and chose the other solution.

As someone else mentioned, when my system was infected with PAV, troubleshooting the issue was near impossible since all my Google searches re-directed me to the same site. Eventually got to this site through MSN, although PAV kept throwing in roadblocks to block my navigation of topics.

    POSSIBLE FIX

    POSSIBLE FIX

Sorry for the Caps but there is pages of this so I thought I would shout that I think I’ve found a fix.

Deleting PAV was easy enough. End Program on PAV.EXE and kill the directory. You should probably clean startup which I must go back to but that wasn’t my main concern. PAV had it’s hooks in Internet explorer and kept popping up with either the red message or a bar at the top of the page.

    The culprit is MSXML2.DLL

This looks like a genuine Windows DLL dosen’t it. Well it’s not. A web search will show that although Microsoft did make it, it’s now defunked I think they said IE5. You can tell it’s crap if you look at the file properties. Similar MSX… files tell you what they are and that Microsoft made them, this one says next to nothing.

Goto Tools (in IE), manage addons, Enable or disable addons. Your looking for an enabled item that says msxml2.dll under the file collum disable that one. In the collum saying name it will be a long string of numbers and leters that’s actually part of the registry address. Once it’s disabled you can stop there but I would go to WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 and delete the file. You can also run REGEDIT and search for msxml2.dll and delete that section. If you do the last part it won’t even come up in the manage addons section.

    All this on IE7

I really hope this helps you guys. I can’t type the bad things I would like to about the bastards who make this crap. We can only hope that they are based in a country which is looking for them.

Patrick, you are on the right track. I downgraded my IE7 to IE6 hoping it would go away, but it didn’t. Then after I removed msxmlm.dll, it fixed the IE.

Okay folks, here are the steps -

Run msconfig to disable pav.exe from Start Up.
find it, rename it or delete it. It’s normally located at “c:\programs\Personal Antivirus”. This will fix the popping up messages on the desktop.

    Start IE6/7, locate Manage Add-ons.
Disable the Add-on that uses msxml2.dll or msxmlm.dll. You can do a search by file name. It’s in C:\windows\system32. Rename it to somehting unusalbe. such as msxmlmzzz.ddd I had trouble deleting it. The date of that .dll file is the date when your pc is affected.

Cleaning up registry is optional. You can run some regclean tools later. Or do it manually like others have suggested.

I have symantec, and I also have the personal antivirus. My computer has been bleeping off in the middle of everything, whenever it feels like it, and doesn’t come back on by itself. I have to restart with the button. Symantec doesn’t even aknowledge that anything happened when I check. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. I have had several medium security threats since. It sucks.

When I follow Ken’s instructions to the point where I click on “uninstall>personalav” I get a warning “An unidentified program wants access to your computer. Don’t run this progam unless you now where its from or you’ve used it before: pav.exe (unknown publisher). I’m given the prompt “Cancel: I don’t know where tis program is or what its for” Based on what Ive read, this sounds like a program I definitely don’t want to run. Will running uninstall help or hurt my computer at this point?

    3. my cat, which showed me to stay cool, without caps or expletives.

II> Am puzzled how I got this virus. My internet link had been down for daysm and I visited only a few web sites before the PAV appeared. They were: cnn.com, spiegel.de, elpais.es, lemonde.fr, gmail.com. amazon.com, bart.gov/parking; and Internet Explorer 8, and finally, I clicked on a security update icon in the systems tray, which is my prime suspect. Any ideas on how it might have gotten on my machine?

On July 12, PAV installed on my computer. When I would go to Windows defender history it stated 3 unknown programs/actions were allowed. These were indeed the nasty PAV crooks. I decided to try Ken’s suggestions and was able to uninstall. Now when I go to Windows defender it identifies the nasty PAV as; TrojanWin32/yektel.A, TrojanWin32/FakeXPA,
TrojanWin32/Liften.B The action taken is listed as removal and the status is succeeded.
My computer is acting normally since I uninstalled on July 14. I then sent all PAV folders and uninstalls to recycle bin then went to the bin and deleted.
I’m not sure why some are claiming Ken is a fake. PAV so far as left and not returned for me.
If anyone here is benefiting from PAV, shame on you! change your ways! You are bringing misery to some and you need to stop it.

o_o;; My gf’s computer was infected with the PAV program recently and she thought it was because I caused it (O_O;;;; I really thought I did cause it too!!). o_o So I was banned from the computer for a while until she found a way to get rid of it. Just today she found the uninstall button after fruitless attempts to rid the computer of the program; from deleting all the files to restoring the computer to a check-point. ^_^ She’s not mad at me anymore, I got my computer privelidge back and she’s happy now!! O_O;;;; I know I am, I didn’t want to be the cause to her computer’s destruction!!

Whew, O_O;;;;;; Glad that’s over with though!!

Think I dodged the bullet. I picked up this virus today and all I needed to do was stop the application and erase the program files and shortcuts off my hard drive and desktop; there were no related registry files that I could find and I only had two program files to erase, not the long list shown on this page. Now all seems to be working well, unless I’m missing something?

  355. By Sea Dog on Aug 6, 2009 | Reply

Yea, I just got that PAV too yesterday. I was just surfing the web and it appeared out of no where. Sometimes I get crazy ideas in my head like these web sites that sell removal tools got together and created this PAV and cut it loose on the net so everyone would pay the $40.00 to buy their removal tools and sign up for yearly coverage. Just a crazy thought!

P.S. It took me all day to get rid of it! Drove me crazy in the process. Frick’in PAV quick start icon sticks in the auto tool bar next to the clock and it won’t come out. Keeps tossing out popups to no end. The left quick start icons have a separate menu where you can remove them by the start button. The right quick start icons are on the programs auto pilot and the only way to remove them is to remove the whole program. With the PAV you can remove the program but the icon stays and keeps tossing the popups out. It’s gone now.

Hang these feens to the nearest oak tree. I get to slap the horse on the arse!

  362. By Mr. Walker on Aug 10, 2009 | Reply

ok, to everyone that has made the mistake of deleting any of the pav folders before realising you can uninstall it(which i made the same mistake).

rebbot it on safe mode (run:msconfig, then go to boot and select safe mode)

he you have to do a system restore (which brings back the pesky pav folders, enabling you to do the full uninstall) by going into run (again) and type in rstrui.exe

after that it’ll do everything for you and go back to the log in screen.

after that turn off safe mode and reboot again…

now, all the evil pav folders will be back, which will alow you to do it “kens” way (bloody legend mate), go into c drive/ program files/ common files/ uninstall.
you’ll see pav.exe there, click on it and bam, the cheeky bugger uninstalls (for bloody good too)

i did this, it worked, and have been using the net for the past hour like it was before pav came along. I’m just exstatic that its dead for good now.
    thanx ken, bloody legend mate.

    This is what I did:

I rebooted my computer in safe mode. Then I went into the Program Files to delete the PersonalAV folder. After deleting, I tried to restore my computer to an earlier date. My computer restarted, but the system restore failed. However, the Personal AntiVirus no longer showed up. Just in case, I unhid all my folders. Then I went into the Application Data folder to check to see if there were still traces left. There was not. I performed system restore again, and it was successful this time.

However, malware and viruses are deceptive devils. I fear that there are still traces left that I missed. What is a good way to check besides scanning with an Antivirus software? Do you consider Avira Antivirus as a good software?

    Thanks.

I just fixed my friends computer from this nasty little pop up virus, “microsoft”(government paid criminals who design these viruses and rip the money out of us all)
I found the mongrel in program files folder entitled personalAV
to get rid of this folder you have to turn off the stupid pop up on your task bar first as it is constantly accessing the folder and windows will not allow you to delete it.you can stop it temporarily either through msconfig in run then uncheck pav or shut pav.exe down in task manager(or end its tree) then delete the 1.8 mb folder, you may still have the stupid orange sheild it puts in taskbar but go to start-run-type”msconfig”-startup-uncheck pav.exe- reboot – msconfig message appears again – check normal start up – apply – enjoy a virus free enviroment
ps..Never download any antivirus programs that go big on you giving them money they are crooks(microsoft employs these cyber criminals to rip the money for them and allow them to remain on the net without being stopped)

brave sentry and personal AV can suck my ****

P.S.: One simple hint that I used that worked: Go to START, all programs, accessories, system tools, and system restore. Pick any date before the date of infection, and restore your computer. I did this yesterday to one day before the trouble started, and everything was gone from the infection. This may not be the best way, but it worked for ME.

The most simple sure way to get rid of this is stop the “PAV.EXE” process tree from the task manager or stop the process from msconfig… or try corey’s way. Then go to superantispyware.com for the free software. TRUST ME IT IS THE BEST SOFTWARE EVER… I EARNED OVER 500 bucks from using this software for customers who have viruses on their PC… Install the software…. let it COMPLETE SCAN… then choose remove all…. If it says restart… restart computer… then all virus/trojans will be removed forever!!! just make sure you update SUPERANTISPYWARE and scan your computer about once a week for the free version… for the paid version.. you can enable SUPERANTISPYWARE to scan at a certain time and date when you are not on it. then your life(COMPUTER) is safe.

I was getting close to the bottom of the comment’s section and was worried when I noticed nobody was calling anyone out on this “Ken” BS.

“Give it a try. It may be their legal backdoor way out.”

Does no one see the flaw in that logic? It’s a bloody virus! There is no legal backdoor out for that, apart from the literal backdoor they’ll be running for when the police find their house.

But hey, I’m not a total skeptic. If Ken or anyone else can tell us just how they managed to contact this so-called Customer Support Center for this helpful advice I’ll recant. Cause there are a lot of people on this site who would just LOVE to tell them what they think of their “product”.

I also had the annoying personal anti-virus (Pav) on my computer. It looks so legit, so please do not be fooled into paying any money to remove it. I noticed that some of the solutions that I read directed me to sites that wanted to charge me money to remove this virus. Keep in mind that I am a grandmother and was finally able to figure out how to remove this virus after about three hours of banging my head in frustration. First of all I would like to say that if you have Windows Vista and you go into the Control Panel and try to remove it by locating the “Pav” file, that does not work. Because this is such a tricky virus you have to outsmart it. Even though I had the Mc Fee Virus protection, the PAV virus would load up on my PC when I logged on. This is the answer to the problem. When you log on to your coputer, wait for it to fully load before you begin this process. 1. Press Cnt. Alt. & Delete key at the same time and go into Task Manager 2. Low and behold you will see the Pav file under the applications doing it’s thing and that is called “running.” 3. Press end task tab at the bottom for the Pav program to quit running. 4. Next go into the Control panel and go to programs. You will see the Pav program. Hightlight and then delte this entire icon. Note that the Icon also looks legit, it looks like a security sign. 5. After deleting from your programs then go to the recycle bin and then remove the Pav file from there. Restart your computer and the Personal Anit-Virus program is gone and it didn’t cost you a dime to remove it. Good luck.

Ken’s April 21, 2009 post worked for me. I originally deleted everything I could find on the PC, including the Uninstall icon. I then went into the Recycle Bin and restored the files. I then found the Uninstall icon in the Common Files folder. I double-clicked the icon and a window instantly popped up stating the Uninstall was Complete. I was a bit concerned when the Complete message popped up so quickly, but it seems to have worked. Easy as pie. It’s now gone and no annoying popups on Internet Explorer!

After going through many replies, I came upon thanks heaped onto Ken, so I tried it (husband’s ‘puter caught the antivirus virus yesterday). It was at least removed from the taskbar along with the annoying alters.

Don’t know if it is truly removed, but for the moment it appears to be resolved using Ken’s method.

Ken’s post is dated April 21st. Easy, quick and appears to have worked. Thanks Ken!

  451. By Jason on Sep 3, 2009 | Reply

Ken’s method works. Try it, you’ll see. Once you are done(it’s pretty quick) run an anti-virus scan, and a malware scan(you should have more than one program protecting your computer). Clear out your recylcing bin and restart.

Everything should work fine at this point.

If your IE isn’t working or you don’t have the uninstall exe anymore, that means you probably went off half-cocked and deleted some things you shouldn’t have. A system restore is probably your easiest and best bet for fixing that, those instructions are up there in the list as well.

Have fun. Oh and for anyone curious, the persons computer I just removed PAV off of, I’m about 90% sure she got it from clicking on a facebook ad in her email about DJ AM dying…

The worst thing about this virus is that when you try and search for ways to remove it (ie. in google – type personal antivirus removal software), you click on the links and they all take you to the same page. this page is linked with the virus!!!!!

the only thing i found which worked was using someone elses computer and downloading the removal instructions on this, then doing them on my infected computer.

you MUST download malwarebytes antivirus software. this is the ONLY thing that worked for me and got my computer working again.

This is probably the 20th malware of this type that I have come across, being rather computer literate friends call me to help them with their problems.

I equate this type of malware to Cyber Terroism, as they hijack your computer in order to get you to buy their product, thats like car dealers jumping in the back seat of your car and staying there, until you buy a car from them!

If there is somone who has legal knowledge or is an attorney, please investigate if there is some way to bring legal action against one of these companies and make an example of the first so the rest will cease these “terrorist” like practices. I have contacted the companies who distribute the software like this and get the same answer, “we are not responsible for how independant licensers distribute our software”, well I am sure if they start feeling it in the pocket book they will take more control of the independants.

It was murder, but, FINALLY, I got it! If you go to “search”,then all files and folders, I typed in “uninstall”. It ran it’s course, wasn’t there, so I expanded it to “hidden files” too. Found it, clicked on it a couple times, and POOF!!! It’s gone. No underlying problemms so far. I tried several other methods, but they didn’t work. Seemed pretty easy in hindsight, since I’d done everything known to man to remove it prior to that.
Good luck, it is one nasty lil’ bitch of a program. Hides well, & blocks any sites with the info on how to remove it. Best of luck to ya, hope this helped!

I thought the advice from Ken was suspect as when I tried to do it, another pop-up warned me that I was under a “security risk” and did not allow me to continue. Phantom’s advise allowed me to initially remove this and the hints from Paul and Britney helped me refine it when I still had it reappear in insidious ways…by-the-way…no one needs to pay money to “anti-virus” software to remove this…including buying Malwarebyte Antivirus. Warning ad’s from *them* very coincidentally appeared at various points when I tried to uninstall…wonder how that came to be…?????

    Hi guys,
This one seems to have evolved and no longer uses pav.exe. It now uses one called psecure.exe
(may be slightly different but since I uninstalled it I can’t remember the exact name – sorry)

The uninstall can now be found here:

    c:\Program Files\Common Files\PSecurityUninstall

    Cheers
    Stu
