I have been effected with Malware Defence and I want to remove it and I have not been able to do so. What do I do ?
I can’t delete the file mdext.dll as when I try i get an error message “Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use”. Any ideas?
Did you try rebooting in safe mode before deleting the file?
this does not work. i follow it precisely, then malware returns when my computer restarts. any suggestions
Has anyone figured out how to actually get rid of this irritant yet – i have tried this and it will not let me delete the files!
After 2 or 3 hours, I’ve finally managed to get rid of most of Malware Defense using mbam, rootrepeal, and ccleaner. Still having the same problem everyone else is though… can’t remove “mdext.dll” Its the only file left of MD and the registry is clean of it, can’t unregister it either for some reason. I’m not having any more problems, but I’d prefer all traces of it be gone. Any ideas?
I’m having the same problem as Bill. I had this stupid Malware Defense and got rid of everything, but it’s refusing to delete …\Program Files\Malware Defense\mdext.dll and I really want to get rid of it in case it does some more damage in the future. I’ve dragged it to my AVG virus vault folder in my C: drive, but what happens now? Will anything else mess up my computer? Will I be protected?
I have this bug on my pc, really pissing me off. I’ve followed the steps and removed most of it (mdext.dll being the outcast). I noticed that my security software wasn’t working so uninstalled it, however when I try to re-install it, I keep getting the message to remove the program Malware Defense, even though the program is not enlisted in my programs list or in the directory (due to removal). What to do about this? Maybe this is the mdext.dll at work??
This advice is excellent and has enabled me to cleanse 2 computers that otherwise appear to have been affected. Many thanks for the help!!

Malwarebytes is a godsend. It’s nice to know there is something out there that will help remove these malicious programs and that is actually free with no gimmicks. It has helped me on more than one occasion. My advice is to try the quick scan first as the full scan will often freeze due to the malware popups. once you remove the shown threats with quick scan and reboot you should then be able to run the full scan with no problems. Good Luck
is this for real?
I’ve followed these steps and successfully deleted all files and registry entries, managed to find the processes that were running (they were under different names than those presented here) all in safe mode but every time I restart the computer it all comes back. What’s going on?
Sherri has it spot on. I installed it in my daughters computer today when she had Malware Detector installed. It removed it. I also ran it in my own computer and cleaned it up. I did as she suggested, ran the quick version, then the Full Scan.
I tried the quick scan, deleted whatever popped up and already saw immense improvement. When I re-booted, no more Malware Defense ads. I was like “HALLELUJAH!” I’m doing the full scan now just in case.
Seriously, just download Malwarebyes on malwarebytes.org and get the damn thing out of your system. I think we’ve all suffered enough. (I know I have) >=O
Malware defense is on my computer but the program itself hasn’t downloaded to my computer. What do I do?
Ok, so I installed malwarebytes to my computer. and it will not even open. I’ve gone through and done the manual delete. the only thing i couldnt find in regedit was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “Malware Defense†and its still popping up. any help?
Ok, I am having the same problem. I have downloaded Malwarebytes on my comuter, via another computer and then transferring it over. I ran the install and it didn’t work. So I installed it on my thumb drive, plugged it in and executed the program. It still refuses to open. I have deleted all registry entries and all of the other files on the PC. A solid fix to this would be awesome.
Rename the Malwarebytes .exe file when you save it. I used xxxxx.exe and that worked.
Rename mbam.exe to firefox.exe then initiate the renamed file. This worked for me.
Ok soo I did used the tdsskiller and it took away what ever it had to, I installed Malwarebytes and it deleted some infections, but still when I try to INSALL my AVG or any virus scan it says that I have to UNINSTALL ” maleware defense” what do i do?? please help!!! please….
I’m having the same problem. I have deleted the appropriate registry keys. Booted/rebooted and cleaned everything/everywhere. I have turned off system restore/turned it back on. All was done in safe mode. When I try to reinstall AVG, it says I have to uninstall Malware Defense first. At a loss. I have MalwareBytes, Advanced System Care, Malware_Defense_Fix, Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic and Trojan Remover. None are showing Malware Defense. I have also created a recovery disk for XP with SP3, not totally sure what to do with that. This is all short of reformatting, which I really, really do not want to do. Any suggestions?
Buy a Mac and you won’t have these problems!

I do have anti virus from Norton does not help.
Thanks in advance
