This damned virus “antivir 2008″ installs itself as a “read only” .exe file. I managed to delete it by first changing its name to “junk.doc”. But by that time it had changed my registry to say that “no hard disk = c & d” (ie my HDs). It also sowed confusion by adding other malware utilities which used the white cross in a red square or circle signal to lull me into a false sense of security.

To cap it all, my firewall etc. provider told me that they could neither stop it sneaking past their system nor show me how to remove it because it is (pseudo) legitimate comercial software.

In future, I will always ctrl/alt/del from boot up because the best initial protection would be to stop it working immediately. One of the first things it did was to disable the Task Manager.

OK, this site just popped open as I was surfing some random websites and I didn’t download anything. I kept trying to exit the popups but it kept on reappearing. So finally I exitted my browser and started surfing again. Everything should be fine just as long as I didn’t download anything from it right?

OK, I just downloaded the spyware program above and it found 12 infections. However, none of them indicate any links to the ‘virus remover 2008′ program above (they’re like cookies and stuff like ad sites or something). Does this mean I don’t have it? If I did have it, the ‘virus remover 2008′ program would pop up wouldn’t it? Thanks. any help/info would be appreciated

If these people would put some of their trickery and deceit aside and maybe divert their talents it into doing something positive, the world would be a little better ,These high tech crooks are obviously to lazy and cowardly to just go ahead and physically steal something this trick is lower than zero.Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just tar and feather them when they are caught.

I fixed it somewhat by deleting all of its registry keys i find on websites and i clean the computer up with Mcaffe, that stopped the refreshing problem. But i still have this pop-up problem and its really annoying

I can tell you how to solve the problem. Extermination. Take all of the people that design bullshit like this, pass a few new laws (if it makes some people feel better) and execute them. The world as a whole will be a lot better off. Realize the sheer volume of grief they cause to millions of people. Execute a few of the parasites and the world will rejoice. It is NOT a moral dilemma for me I consider it an act of self preservation.

    Well.

It has disabled my task manager.

It has disabled my system restore.

“tasklist” is not recognised as a prompt on my command prompt it seems.

and so I think my supercomputer is going to be poorly for a while longer.

    Can anyone help? Please?

  61. By Rohan on Jan 15, 2009 | Reply

    Chloe…

Step by step solving of issues mentioned by you!!

    Click Start–>Run
    Type REGEDIT—>OK
The Registry Editor will now open

    Browse to the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Policies\system
In the right pane, look for the value: DisableTaskMgr
Right click DisableTaskMgr and select Delete. (When prompted with “Are you sure you want to delete this value”, select Yes.

Now browse to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\policies\system
In the right pane, look for the value: DisableTaskMgr
Right click DisableTaskMgr and select Delete. (When prompted with “Are you sure you want to delete this value”, select Yes.

Close the Registry by choosing File | Exit

You should now be able to access Task Manager. If not, reboot into Safe Mode and repeat the steps outlined above.

To fix your System restore problem(please note that system restore must be turned off while u try to remove spyware and virus..to avoid chances of a possibel rollback!!!)
Start the System Control Panel applet. Select the System Restore tab. Clear the “Turn off System Restore on all drives” check box to enable System Restore, or select this check box to disable System Restore. Click OK. Also here:

To delete older restore points, but leave the system restore turned on: Right Click the Drive in question/Properties/Disk Cleanup/More Options/System Restore/Cleanup.

You can also click the Settings button to set a maximum amount of space that you want each drive to use for restore information. If the drive you select isn’t the system drive, you can also disable System Restore on a per-drive basis. The maximum amount of space that you can use for restore information is 12 percent per drive.

Please note that an alternative to the usual method of enabling and disabling Windows XP’s System Restore feature is to use the registry. To use this alternative, perform the following steps: Start the registry editor same way as u did for task manager enabling.

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
If a “DisableSR” value doesn’t exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the value.
Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System Restore.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr to prevent the System Restore service from starting.

Double-click Start, and set the value to 4 to stop the service from starting or to 0 for normal startup. Close the registry editor.

Also I think the problem of your tasklist must be because teh task manager was disabled. Please try teh following steps and get back with whatever results you get!!! Mates..i need your inputs on this!!

    the forum is waiting!!!

For all those bashing the guys that created these viruses/spyware. Be careful what you say about the CIA/NSA. If you think its some low life doing this than in most cases your wrong. How do you think the intelligence agencies build up their massive databases. Presto, they have the market covered since they also now own most of the popular firewalls, anti virus applications out there. Its the classic Problem-solution case. Why do you think the army decided to release the Internet to the general public in the first place. its all to build up databases on everyone. duhhh. anywho there is no real advice in my comments. in the world of intelligence you cant trust anyone. even those things that proved to be trustworthy before. Well i guess the only advice is to have yourself 2 computers. one for surfing the internet and a 2nd one not attached to any internet or network at all for all the other stuff. anywho some of these worms do get annoying as hell to get rid off. As Hancock once said, Good Job.
