What do you do if you can’t get your desktop back, no Start button, nothing but the “you’ve got infections” dialog … and booting up in Safe Mode results in a blank screen with no Start button, etc.? I can’t take any of the steps you suggest because I can’t get the command line prompt to display … aagh!”

Have you tried to bring up the Task Manager via keyboard shortcuts [Ctrl Shift Esc]? From there, you can start a new task. In the Applications tab, there’s a button at the bottm right labelled “New Task” which you can use to start exploere.exe. Or, cmd.exe, as the need arises. That should at least get you to where you need to be… with any luck.
