Basic Registry Editing in Windows XP/Vista

Editing registry key can be very complicated and highly risky. Please do NOT try this unless you are absolutely positive that you might mess up the system, and as always, it’s highly recommended that you do a backup of the registry (or whole system) before making any modifications.

Since it would take hours to talk about the registry, I am just going through the very basic steps. You can always refer to the Microsoft website or books for full details. Here’s the most common steps you might ever need to know for basic troubleshooting:

For Windows XP:

  1. In Windows XP, from Start, and then click on Run.
  2. Type “regedit“, then click on OK.
  3. Now it opens the Registry Editor.
  4. You can easily navigate through the subkey if you know what you are looking for. Or, you can press “Ctrl + F” to locate the subkey that contains the value you want to edit. (F3 to Find Next)

For Windows Vista:

  1. From Start, then type “regedit“.
  2. Click on “regedit” on the search result to open the registry editor in Windows Vista.
  3. Step 3 & 4 are the same as Windows XP (see above).

That’s all you need to know for basic editing such as removing spyware or troubleshooting a basic Windows problem. Please digg it if you find this helpful. Good luck!

to get rid of the system alert problem??? pls help.

  8. 8

    Brian Says

    Suzuna,

Removing those regkeys alone would not get rid of the system alert popups. You need to stop the appropriate processes, unregister and delete the infected dll’s then delete the corresponding regkeys in order to completely get rid of the annoying system alert problems. You can also check the SpyLocked removal instructions which contain the latest infected files at this point in time.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

    for y.w.n

if you are using an account w admin access already, then most likely a mal software has disabled your regedit.

you’ll first have to be sure that the software is not active on the memory.

then copy and paste below code to a textfile named whatever.inf and left click install on the file

    hope this help

i used SpyHunter in order to find all the files, cookies, and registry keys that i needed to delete or unregister, etc. i figured out how to delete the files and such, but in the registry, there are still a few keys that i cannot find at all. why is this? the only part of the keys i can see in SpyHunter are Object name:System location: HKey_Current_User\SOF… and another file is Object name: Microsoft\Windows\… with the location in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOF.. now i’m assuming that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOF .. ends with SOFTWARE. i went in there millions of times and i still cannot find these files. are they hiding somewhere?

All I want to know is: Is it possible to do all that that you’ve talked? I ask this because when I start windows it fails in the desktop with the message “Windows Explorer doesn’t respond” and then he restarts the desktop icons again and again. Always doing this, I can’t even click on any icon because I don’t have time. The only program that the computer starts is the Virus protect pro.

The link then takes you to a download site for PC-antispyware and PC-cleaner. Mistakenly I had downloaded both the files and now my system has become very slow with intermediate false pop ups. Can anybody just tel how to get rid of this softwares. You may mail me: Payal@yahoo.com
